Hamlet - Saturday 26th July

3rd Performance of Hamlet (my 2nd)

Photo of DT at the stage door by Recaf (sometime this week)

It was easier driving up this time as I knew where I was going and where to park, plus I didn't have to work in the morning. I'd booked this seat online once the RSC booking opened so I was in Row G but it was still a good seat. As I'd seen it before I knew to look for David Tennant walking through the crowd just before the eggshell scene.

The first difference I noticed between tonight and Thursday's performance was that Francisco just walked around the stage once before Bernado arrived. On Thursday he walked round three times without speaking but they've obviously cut that.

My friend noticed on Thursday that apparently Patrick Stewart's hands were shaking quite badly in the first scene but tonight he seemed more controlled.

During the scene with Hamlet and Polonius David Tennant walked down the steps at the front of the stage which surprised me. He then picked up the book and I realised that it must have skidded off the stage!

The bedroom scene (which isn't a scene that I've studied much I must admit) was amazing tonight! The acting is so intense in that scene and both actors play it so well. Tonight there was a gap again between the gun being fired, the sound of the gun and the mirror breaking but it's getting better! Tonight I noticed that as Hamlet gets the gun out of the drawer, it is Gertrude who knocks the lamp off the beside table and later Hamlet turns the chandelier on at the back of the table.

There was a touching part in the bows tonight as David Tennant and Penny Downie seemed to share a moment of enjoying the applause and having given a great performance! They've changed the bow part too as they now come on stage in groups (other than PS and DT who come out on their own) which they didn't do on Thursday.

On the way back to my car I was listening to a couple of ladies who had been at the Friday night performance and they said that Ophelia hadn't taken her clothes off last night but tonight she was back to doing it.

Next performance for me: press night of Hamlet on Tuesday!!!
